Consequently some of the work is approaching 20 years old and time, nature and general wear and tear, as a result of a large number of visitors (300,000 a year), have taken their toll. As a result there are areas which now require early attention to prevent major deterioration in the fabric of the ship both above and below deck. The work required is as follows, the cost of which runs into hundreds of thousands: replacement of the bulwarks and waterbar, overhaul of all the rigging and dry-docking to inspect and paint the hull. The ship is the responsibility of the Warrior Preservation Trust, an independent charity that is not supported by any government department. It relies on income from visitors, hiring the ship for social functions and fundraising to preserve the ship to a high and safe standard for the benefit of this and future generations.
