HRH Princess Alexandra Visits HMS Warrior
Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra recently visited HMS Warrior which signalled the start of restoration work aiming to bring back the majestic battleship’s former glory. Unfortunately, due to being located outdoors and at the mercy of Mother Nature, there’s a degree of weathering that hits the ship each year – damage that needs to be addressed or lose the ship forever.
The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded HMS Warrior £2.6 million to repair bulwarks and water bar that are currently putting the ship at risk. The work will be completed over the next two years and will see the ship safeguarded for years to come.
During her visit HRH Alexandra signed the ship’s logbook and was a part of a cake cutting ceremony up on the main deck. The Heritage Lottery Funded grant, awarded to HMS Warrior 1860 to undertake vital repair work, also marked the retirement of Chairman Rear Admiral Bawtree CB and Trustee Lord Wakeham.
Chief Executive and HMS Warrior 1860 Captain Tim Ash said: ‘It was a great pleasure for us to welcome Her Royal Highness on board to formally start our preservation project. Everyone was very touched by the interest she showed in our work and the activities we support, such as the school groups who joined us today.’
